FELE Organizational Development Practice Exam – Prep & Study Guide

The correct choice is ROM, which stands for Read-Only Memory. ROM is classified as non-volatile storage because it retains its contents even when the power is turned off. This characteristic makes it essential for storing firmware, which is software that is closely tied to specific hardware and unlikely to need frequent updates. In many computing systems, ROM is used to store the basic instructions that are needed to boot the computer and perform system diagnostics.

Furthermore, the non-volatile nature of ROM emphasizes its importance in preserving data that is crucial for system functionality, particularly during the startup processes of a device. This stability in data retention contrasts with other storage types, which either lose data without power or are designed for temporary storage. By understanding this, one can see why ROM is fundamental in computer architecture, as it serves as a reliable medium for critical software needed for device operation.
